MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT

Art Basel in Miami last week was once again a feast for art lovers.
The entire city was consumed with showing art. The Convention Center was only the beginning. There was art in tents, in hotels, on the streets and on the people. Many amazing new and interesting concepts were being explored and were expressions of the fast moving times we live in. At the same time though, I thought that the important dealers played it safer than usual and showed more familiar work that was most likely to sell....again, a sign of the times.

Our December meeting will feature pictures that I took at various venues around Miami. We are planning on a meeting that is more of a holiday celebration of art. Perhaps you might bring in a piece of art that you are working on and want to share with us. Let's just get together and enjoy an evening together.

MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT

I have just returned from several weeks in Manhattan, where the weather was perfect and the Art was incredibly inspiring.

Firstly, I could not get enough of the High Line on the West Side, between 12th and 30th Streets. This whole area, the Meat Packing District up to Chelsea has been transformed. This is now the heart of trendy Art, shopping and dining. The old elevated tracks have become a park and pedestrian walkway along the Hudson River and are not to be missed on a trip to New York.

The Picasso paintings of Maria Terese at Gasgosian Gallery on 21st Street, were the most comprehensive I have ever seen and really enhanced my appreciation for his works from this period.

Another wonderful highlight was the DeKooning exhibit at the Pace Gallery on 57th St. His abstracts of mostly women’s bodies were a kinetic experience.
Ahhh, I also saw the Ai Weiwei's Zodiac sculptures in front of the Plaza Hotel. I was in heaven.

One last bragging point,( indulge me), was the Alexander McQueen exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum. This exhibit was more about fine art craftsmanship than clothing...a truly creative mind. Luckily, we can all go online and sample these treats.

Now, onto NCAA news:
We had a great show with three other groups in Palm Beach County. Charles Bieser won a prize at this show at the Lighthouse Art Center. Diane Hutchenson sold her ceramic piece. Katie Diets was so pleased that she is planning to holding it again next year. I really enjoyed organizing the Pot Luck with our team.

This year's FAU Show was our best ever. It was quite cohesive and well hung. Thank you to Katy for the organizing.
Prizes were:
1ST Place, Barbara Carswell
2ND Place, Carol Frezza
3RD Place, Sue Noonan
The exhibit is being taken down on August 5th and paintings will be available at The Village Art Studios that afternoon for pick-up.

UPCOMING SHOWS:
October (dates later): Annual Jupiter Town Hall. This show will be juried for winners this year.

November 2-30: A new venue at Jonathan Dickinson Park. This show will be devoted to Florida Wildlife, both fauna and flora. The Opening Night will be on November 4th.

The Board has begun talking about a boat trip to Trapper Nelson's sometime in mid October (as it cools down) to inspire some of the artists. We might even plan a bar-b-que and painting day in November sometime.

JULY MEETING: July 11, 7PM, Lighthouse Art Center
Film about the artist, LOUISE BOURGEOIS
She passed away at age 98, in 2010, and was a real force internationally, in the Art world, for most of her life. She may be new to some of you,so I thought that we might enjoy her vitality and absolute originality right to the end.

Change Art at the Corner Cafe on Monday, July 18 at 3PM.

See you next week,
Gerri

Both the Tuesday and Friday Plein-aire sessions have been going very well and will continue through February. It is just great getting outside and enjoying our beautiful area. Carol Frezza joined us last Friday and REALLY painted a lovely scene at Saw Fish Bay Park...and she hadn't painted outdoors in a long time. Linda Hastings has been coming and she said that she had never painted outdoors before!
Bill Sabino meets with his group at the Village Art Studios at 10:00 AM on Tuesdays, before deciding on a location for the day.
I schedule a group on Fridays at 12:00 PM at locations listed on the calendar below. Contact me at 561-707-5863, if you have any questions.

February is rich with art fairs and important shows:
..Hudson River School Masterpieces and Jewels from the Marjorie Merriweather Post Collection are both at The Society of the Four Arts in Palm Beach through March 20. They have a full schedule for the season and I have never been disappointed in their exhibits or concerts.

..The American International Fine Art Fair is at the Convention Center in West Palm Beach from February 5 - 13 and is fabulous. The recent Contemporary Show at the Convention Center got my creative juices into overload...it was quite fresh and astounding.

..The Palm Beach Jewelry, Art and Antiques Show is from February 18 - 22, also at the Convention Center.

..The Fine Craft Show is the first week in March at the Convention Center.

THE LIGHTHOUSE ART CENTER has a big event planned for this Thursday at 5:30...It is the ARTIBRA Fashion Show and Sale to benefit Jupiter Hospital.
The Contempo Show was full of strong work by local artists and their 3RD THURSDAY program was one of the best ever. Thirteen artists from the show were asked to submit ten jpegs of recent work and each had five minutes to tell their stories. I was very flattered to be asked and enjoyed each artists' variety of experiences that were reflected in the work.

The next shows at the LIGHTHOUSE will open next week. The Wildlife Photography Juried Show will include several NCAA members. There will also be an exhibit by Highwaymen Artists and the important Golf exhibit that will have extensive memorabilia and could possibly attract a whole new audience to the Art Center.

PLEASE REMEMBER TO SEND YOUR DUES!!!!!!! I sent out reminders and hope that you respond quickly. Send $35 to: Virginia Furey, 13222 Saint Tropez Cir., PBG, Fl. 33410

Brrrr, it's been cold in sunny Florida. As I recall, we weren't able to do much Plein-aire painting last winter, hopefully, we will be luckier this year and some of you will join the group. Painting on site is such a unique experience.

Lynn Morgan's video of her pastel trip to France was wonderful and I hope that we will be enjoying more evenings of special experiences by our members. Please let us know about if there is something you would like to share....your art or a great art trip.

January brings the large art fairs to the Convention Center. Art Basel was fabulous in December and I'm sure that these events will be as well. January 21-24 is Art Palm Beach.

The Winter Catalog is available at the Lighthouse Art Center:

Quite a few members have been selected for the juried Contempo Show at Lighthouse Art Center. Artibra is due on January 3th and is very special. The creativity last year was amazing.
