June 2009

Letter from the President - Gerri Aurre

This month the NCAA gave out it's scholarships and endowments to local art programs.

$500 to the Summer Program at the Lighthouse Center for the Arts
$200 to Molly's House in Stuart
$200 to Martin County Special Needs Training Art Program
$100 to Artists Showcase of the Palm Beaches

There are so many worthy causes in our area so we are making an effort to offer assistance to a greater variety of arts venues.

In addition, the NCAA awarded $25 each to the following students at the Lighthouse Center Elementary/Secondary Students Annual Art Show:

Vicente Alpizar, Pine Jog Elementary School, 4th Grade
"Recycle for a Brighter World", multi-media

Anjelique Stelwagon, Independence Middle School, 6th Grade
"Companion", tempera

Kiera Pelletier, South Fork High School, 11th Grade
" Escape", photograph

At our May meeting, members seemed to enjoy getting in touch with their inner child and generally being messy with papier-mache. I do hope that some of you join me, with your work, on May 31st, at my studio from 4 to 6.

I had forgotten how much I enjoy the medium and expect that somehow I will incorporate papier-mache into future work. I used Plaster Cloth, ordered from Jerry's Arterama. It is much less messy than the newspaper and wallpaper paste version.

Next month our demonstrator will be Quince Quaintance. I've asked Quince to bring along some examples of his beautiful landscapes and it should be wonderful learning about some of his techniques.

Space available at new VILLAGE ARTISANS, being established in the gallery space adjacent to the Lighthouse Center for the Arts (The Cloutier Gallery space)

May 2009

Message from the President, Gerri Aurre:

Doreen Lepore had a beautiful show at Molly's House last month and she arranged for NCAA to have one there during May. This is a group that does wonderful things for their community in Stuart. It is run very much like a Ronald McDonald type house where the families of Martin Memorial patients can stay for a very nominal fee. Right now we have about 8 artists who will be displaying their art all through the house. The opening is on May 7th, from 4 to 7.

Our demonstrator this month was Cynthia Cooper from The Framery in Hobe Sound. Every time I've seen Cynthia's work I've always wondered exactly what her technique was. She gave a lively and informative session and explained it all for us.

The process of attaching the green leaves to the surface if the canvas can't be rushed. She works flat and uses framers glue and silicon chauking before adding about 8 coats of waterbased paint. In her beach scenes, Cynthia uses white sand from her yard and mixes KILZ paint with her acrylics. She seals her pieces with Minwax Polyacrylic for a high gloss finish. Her miniatures on heavy weight watercolor papers are lovely as well. It was a fun evening that left us with lots of ideas.

The Student-Member Show at the Lighthouse Center for the Arts was a very successful event with over 400 people attending the Opening. Linda Matheson sold her beautiful piece that evening. 33 of our members exhibited and we did very well in the judging.

Congratulations to:
Quince Quaintance who received a 3rd Place Award.
Tess Lindsay and Jack Keogh earned Awards of Merit.
Joseph Pierre received Honorable Mention.

Tess also sold a painting at Fantasia this month!
Nancy Leonetti sold one at the Corner Cafe.

Julie Beaumont and I will be having an Open House at our studio on Sunday, April 26th from 4 to 6. The theme this month will be Wearable Art. Please get creative and join us.....or just come by for a nice time. We're at: 221 Old Dixie, Jupiter/Tequesta, Suite 6

Next month, on Sunday May 31, we will be exhibiting Papier-Mache work.... I mentioned this at the April NCAA meeting and there seemed to be interest in learning more about this media. Since I was an Elementary Art teacher, I have YEARS of experience.! and will do a demonstration at the May meeting. I use Paris-Craft, which is the material doctors use on casts so it won't be TOO messy. Bring a smock or apron and be prepared to dig in. Also, you might bring some ideas with you as well.

Lastly, another fun event will be CHAIRITY, sponsored by the SeaBranch Art League. Each artist paints, embellishes, wraps, etc. on a chair of their choice. The chairs will be displayed at the Lighthouse Center for one month beginning June 15th. They will be auctioned on July 15th. Each artist will have wall space to exhibit a few of their paintings as well. Most of the proceeds will benefit the 2009 Summer Program.
