March 2009

Message from the President, Gerri Aurre:

Hugh O'Neill did a particularly fine demonstration for us at the February meeting. Hugh concentrates on tonal form, much as the Impressionists did. They studied color, exclusively, without thought to other aspects in painting. Hugh likes to surprise audiences with quotes from the masters that you wouldn't necessarily expect. "I don't invent the painting"..Van Gogh.
Hugh paints what he sees, he says, without being inventive. He feels that confidence brings freedom and his work is about cool and warm color to define space. What we particularly enjoyed was his luscious, thick use of paint that was put down on the canvas at a sure and rapid pace.

Treat yourselves to a few of our Saturday sessions with Hugh. Contact Carol: 744-9490

The Jupiter Town Hall exhibit had it's usual fine opening on Feb. 12 with many of our members works on display.

The Art, Antique and Jewelry Show at the Convention Center was fabulous. Watch for the next big event there, The Fine Craft Show, on the first weekend in March.

There are three other "must see" shows currently in our area. Long Island Impressionists from the North Fork are at the Lighthouse Center for the Arts. They are also hosting several terrific free programs in conjunction with their exhibits.

The Impressionist Landscapes at the the Norton is a very beautiful show that seems to specialize in work that simply oozes off the canvas. (Can you tell that I am an admirer of the thick, heavy brushstroke?) Their quite extensive Georgia O'Keeffe and Ansel Adams show is worth a visit to the museum.

A few of us really treated ourselves to a special day at the Flagler Museum on Palm Beach. We started with the High Tea luncheon in the Pavilion and then saw the Children in Art exhibit in the mansion.

"Season" is exhausting! We'll wait until April to return to the Friday plein-aire sessions.
