January 2009

January will be the last paper issue of CONNECTIONS.

From the President
By Gerri Aurre

The Winter season will be in full swing (I don't know about that, THIS year) with the "Palm Beach 3 Show" at the Convention Center from January 15 to 18. Our "Abstract Attraction Show" is scheduled to be hung at the Lighthouse on January 8th to celebrate the spirit of Contemporary Art. CONGRATULATIONS to the three juried winners: Emalee Andre, Camille Babusik and Tanya Pfeffer-Witzel. The well known, Palm Beach artist, Bruce Helander, was the judge. We must thank Sonya Davis for her support and confidence that our artists would provide quality work for the Lighthouse Gallery.

I'll be having a Salon des Refuses, of a sort, at my studio on Old Dixie Hwy. sometime after the Lighthouse opening.

As some of you know, I was lucky enough to spend the entire week in Miami at Art Basel. The most amazing thing is that I still don't think that I saw it all. Miami becomes an Art City. It oozes Art. If you haven't had the chance to experience the Miami Art scene, I highly recommend a drive down to the Wynwood District. The Margolis and Rubelle Collections, alone, are worth the trip.

Our December meeting in the main gallery was the perfect way to get in the holiday spirit. The refreshments provided by Muriel Hall and Bea Basara were over the top and simply wonderful. Thank you both so much. Peter Chepus was, as always, a very positive and encouraging speaker as he critiqued our work. Peter will be teaching figure drawing at the Lighthouse school this year. The evening was definitely highlighted by the appearance of 7 year old, Sawyer Williams and his artwork. Beth's son seemed to really enjoy getting up and talking about his work.

News: Please, try to change your artwork every month at our venues. There are always people waiting to hang theirs and I would rather not get involved in taking down other peoples work.

Tess Lindsay sold a painting and Linda Mathison sold a photograph at the Corner Cafe.

December 2008

From the President
By Gerri Aurre

The D'Art for Art cocktail party was again, a wonderful affair. Many members of North County contributed their beautiful work to this fundraiser and I want to thank you for your generosity. I also attended the dinner and "D'Art" and I can tell you that your paintings all have good homes. The crowd was enthusiastically marking down their choices and even bidding hundreds of dollars for the chance to be out there before the others. I really think that it's a win, win situation for all involved.

There will be 3 juried winners for Abstract Attractions, whose work will be exhibited in the left front gallery at the Lighthouse in January. I will be having a"Salon des Refuses" at my little studio space for all the entrants. The studio is at 221 Old Dixie Hwy., Suite 6, Jupiter(Opposite the cement plant!) It should be fun. This emphasis on the Abstract is in conjunction with the "Palm Beach 3"event that takes place at the Convention Center in January.

Nancy Tart was our November demonstrator. Her interest is in light and shadows and she worked all around the canvas of her still life. Nancy reduces her canvas to abstract shapes and draws influence from Wolf Kahn, among others. She mentioned the artist Joan Mitchell who said that women tend to tidy up their paintings and end up killing them!

Election of officers will take place at the December meeting. We will gladly take self-nominations before then. Peter Chepus, http://www.chepus.com/, will be doing a critique at the meeting, so be sure to bring something you are working on. Peter requests that you bring a black and white photo or Xerox copy of the piece you bring for critique. The meeting will be at the Gallery this month and holiday refreshments will be provided....let's be festive!

Reminder: Dues are renewable by January 1st.

January will be the last paper issue of CONNECTIONS. Stay current so that you can continue to receive updates of our BLOG and be able to continue to exhibit at our many venues. We will still be sending out paper issues to those of you who do not have computer access.

This $$$$$ savings will enable us to be involved in giving to more arts programs and scholarships....PLUS, it looks great and can be updated throughout the month.

Plein-aire painting starting on Friday, Dec. 12 11AM at River Bend Park, Indiantown Rd., Jupiter, also on Dec 19...followed by a critique of the work and lunch out, of course !!!

Peggy Kirkwood talks about the value of a good brush.

From the President
By Gerri Aurre

The most important information this month is that the NCAA will be sending out its newsletter on a BLOG. Thanks to Doreen Lepore, our newsletter editor, you will be able to access Connections and the calendar of events on line. If all goes well, we will be phasing out the paper edition within the next few months.
This cost savings will enable us as an organization to use our non-profit status to further promote the arts locally.

We are also working on creating our Website. I have several sources but am still interested in reviewing some others. If anyone knows a local webmaster, I would appreciate hearing from you. I think that we should have examples of member's art on the site and links to your websites.

It's important that you get your correct E-mail addresses and website information, as well as your dues, in quickly to us.

Peggy Kirkwood was a really fine speaker this month and her hour passed very quickly. She gave good tips on the most important components and techniques of watercolor. I'd certainly recommend taking a class with Peggy. She was thorough and delightful.

The Lighthouse Center for the Arts continues to have the Brown Bag series of free demos on Fridays from 11 to 1.

There are still spots available to hang work at any of the Bank Atlantic branches. These venues are especially good for large pieces. The sign up sheets will be posted at the monthly meetings. Please don't hesitate to call me or any of the coordinators if you would like a spot. These banks are good exposure and hopefully we will be selling artwork as well. Sara Fisher sold a painting at the Abacoa branch.

The PGA branch is planning on giving us a show, with reception, in late January.

From the President
By Gerri Aurre

Karen Hudson provided us with an entertaining hour at the September meeting. I had asked her to speak with us because her paintings provide such a unique take on the world.
The first thing that Karen did was pose the question: What is the difference between creative and non-creative people? Answer: The only difference is that creative people THINK they are creative! She gets her perspective from the comics: "Wizard of Id" and "Far Side". Karen's paintings often include her pug dog, Buttercup, placed alongside friends in unusual places...wearing odd outfits and expressions. It's really much more than that though. Her work is not about technique, it's about a fresh look at ordinary things.
The cleverness of her titles bring a smile as you look at the work. "Rest in Peas"...it's very clever.
She had some good tips as well:
Who buys your art? " DINKS"...Dual income, no children
When people ask for a better price, offer them a 15% decorator discount or take $100 off for the frame
Frames can be had from the trash, consignment shops or from oddly shaped European sized ones at art stores, where you can stretch the canvas to fit or cut a board
It was a great disappointment to have the Annual Jupiter Town Hall Show cancelled. Hopefully, it will be rescheduled.
This month we are starting to exhibit at four Bank Atlantic branches in the area. Sara Fisher can be thanked for this wonderful opportunity. We put out sign up sheets at the September meeting. If you cannot attend meetings and are interested in being added, please contact:

At the Board Meeting this month we discussed the slate of officers for 2009. Please let me know if you are interested in serving on any committee or in accepting a position. Sara Fisher and Beth Williams attended and will be in charge of setting up our shows for next year. It's great to have fresh talent!
We're planning on having another Board meeting on October 22nd at 3:00, at my house. We need more time to fully explore the idea of a NCAA Website and placing our newsletter on line. Please let me have your input. Also, we talked about having a Power Point presentation about creating personal websites at the December meeting.

Don't forget D'ART for ART: Bring your donated Art to the Lighthouse Center for the Arts before October 31st..... The cocktail party for donators is fabulous!

Also, how about considering attending the event???? I'm looking to reserve a table.
