Here we are again about to look forward to the Fall and a new season of Art here in South Florida.

First, CONGRATULATIONS to our members Bill Jones, 2nd place and Carolyn Austin , 3rd place for their art work in the LAC Art of Association show!

The NCAA show at the Jupiter Community Center is approaching and applications can be downloaded by contacting Linda Mathison, mathisonlr@gmail.com  The exhibition runs October 7-November 13, 2016.  Space is limited.  Deadline to apply is Friday, September 30th.  Further instructions are on the entry form.

The Jupiter Art Committee has supported us and sponsored this show for many years….Let’s have a good showing!

As quiet as the Summer is, there are a number of fine shows going on right now. First of all, during rebuilding, the Norton Museum is open and free to the public.  This is a two year massive project and they are striving to remain relevant during the process. I attended a terrific discussion about a Matisse sculpture one afternoon last week.  Check out the schedule for their latest events.

The "All Florida Show" is at the Boca Museum is until September 25th.  It is very well presented and I thought that there were some important works exhibited.  This museum seems to be doing some good things lately. The same can be said for the Ft. Lauderdale Museum under the leadership of  Bonnie Clearwater from Miami.

The shows at the Cultural Council in Lake Worth are also both very worthwhile visiting…and they had a wonderful Opening. NCAA has become a member again and so we are invited to their events. "Women in the Visual Arts” is exhibiting there until October 1st. The "Armory Faculty Show" runs until October 29th and these local artists made quite an effort to show new work.

In general, the Art community in our area is alive and very well.  I think that in the next few years South Florida will continue to emerge as an important contributor to the American Art scene.

Our first meeting this season, at the newly refreshed Lighthouse Art Center, is on Monday, September 12th at 7:00 p.m.  Cindy Bartosek will be demonstrating eco printing. ( Printing plant material on fabric and paper.)  She will be offering classes at the Lighthouse Art Center School and has a lot to show us.

The photography show, " Eyes Wide Open"  will open at LAC on September 1st with an Opening Reception scheduled for September 15th.

“Size Matters: 6x6” will be a show from November 17 to December 15…that’s 6 INCHES OR 6 FEET... Entries can be submitted with Juried Art Services right now.

Lots is happening…..Lots to do!!

Two great shows were hung this week. ..The Eissey Theatre lobby and Art of Association at the Lighthouse.  I think that the work is interesting and we are well represented. Hanging such diverse pieces is a challenge but really quite fun.  Julie Beaumont, Linda Mathison and I put in a full day at the Lighthouse and, of course, treated ourselves to a fine lunch in the middle of it all.

Katy DiGioia will run our June 13th meeting and members will have a chance to discuss their piece at Art of Association. Come ready to tell us all about your inspiration. The opening reception for this show will be on June 16th, 5:30-7:30.

Try to stop by the Eissey Theatre sometime this summer as well.  This show is there until September 26th.

The children’s show at the Lighthouse was very good this year.  Katy DiGioia and Karen Reinhardt awarded the five prizes from NCAA and we made a $100 donation to Martin County Special Needs.

NCAA is also sponsoring a week of Summer Art camp for an 8 to 12 year old.

I am off and running for the summer, as are many of you.  Enjoy, and come back ready to create!

Now is the time for entries to be submitted for TWO upcoming Summer shows.

The Call to Artists for Art of Association is NOW.  Deadline for sending images to Linda Mathison - mathisonlr@gmail.com  is 5/21/2016. You don’t send images to the Lighthouse, as the entries will be judged by NCAA. You can download the entry forms or pick them up at the Village Art Studios. NCAA members will be assured of having one piece in the show because of the limited space.  Your NCAA dues must be paid to participate.

Please submit payment directly to the Lighthouse Art Center:  $20 for LAC members or $30 for non-members. This should be done by 5/21/16 as well.

All pertinent information is on the Call to Artists.

Delivery of art work will be on June 2, 10am-2pm

We have also been asked to have a show at the Eissey Theatre from June 1 to September 26.
Please send your images to Linda-mathisonlr@gmail.com by May 16th.  List title, size, media and price. We have to send all pertinent information to Eissey before the show. Drop off to the Eissey Theatre will be on June 1, between 10 and 12.

This month’s speaker will be photographer, Bruce Bain.  Bruce will give a talk about composition and offer us some insights into how he markets his images.  He has had a long career in photography and has much to say. I expect that the key to ANY successful art is basically good composition!

There will be a Board Meeting on Wednesday, May 18th at Noon, at the Village Art Studios.

Enjoy the breezes and the last few weeks of Plein Air…call Bill Sabino about locations.

Apologies to David Huebsch.  He won and Honorable Mention in the Oil-Acrylic category of the LAC Members Show.  Congratulations!

Our demonstrator this month will be Anthony Burks.  Anthony is a most interesting multi-media conceptual artist with a long list of achievements.  His paints in bright colors and a fluid style.  He is often called upon to curate shows for local artists and groups.  He and his wife, Tina Slade-Burks, are at the hub of the Palm Beach County Art scene.

Plein air for April can be arranged by calling Bill Sabino: 757-871-2808….We still have a few weeks of good weather!

Plein Air to be arranged

Monday, March 7, 2016

There are many things happening on the Palm Beach County Cultural scene this month that are very exciting. Women are really dominating the Art at exhibits and galleries.  They are appearing, not so much for their “Womanhood”,  as for the exceptional quality of the work. Women have found their voices and are finally beginning to be presented in a major way….and, this is a worldwide trend.

The Norton Museum has two fabulous exhibits that are not to be missed. Njideka Akunyili Crosby, a young Nigerian American woman, has a show called “I Refuse to be Invisible”.  It is, by far, one of the most beautiful shows that I have seen anywhere.  Her work has everything…Form, composition and technique.

Then there is “Women Modernists in New York”…works by O’Keeffe, Stettheimer, Torr, and Zorach. These works, from 1910 to 1935, are a wonderful intro into women emerging in New York and the struggles they faced in being relevant in the Art world.

Our own Palm Beach County Cultural Council, in Lake Worth, is showing a multi-media show called:
“Woman: Untitled”.  These are powerful artists from South Florida who have something to say.  Additionally, two women are being featured in the smaller gallery who are unique.  Raheleh Filsoofi, from Iran, is a ceramicist and Sibel Kocabasi, from Turkey, is presenting work about female identity.  They have intensely crossed cultures and brought us Art that is extremely relevant to our time.

The Lighthouse Art Center Member Show is this month…always a treat and fun to be in.

On the far lighter side (it’s outdoors!), " Artfest by the Sea “, in Juno, is on March 12 &13.  The North Palm Beach Cultural Council will be hosting a booth there.  This event is along the beach and is free and fun.

Plein-Air continues into March and  I hope that many of you join in.  I am always looking for new sights and welcome any suggestions.

Our presenter this month is Craig McGuinness, an imaginative painter.  He will tell us about his work on murals and some of the varied projects he takes on.

Oh, don’t forget to pay your dues.  I have not sent out written notices this year….but, please send in your $35….we do good things!

To good Art and a great month,
